Abstract

The influence of the Internet on journalism can be summarized in two main developments: that of Computer-Assisted Reporting & Research (CARR) and of the rise and establishment of a ‘fourth’ domain in journalism (next to radio, television and die press): on line journalism. This paper explores the context of the developments regarding journalism and the Internet, discusses theoretical and methodological issues involved in researching on line journalism and journalists and presents the findings of a survey study among on line journalists in the Netherlands. It is suggested that the conclusions based on the evidence of the survey and the developments in terms of journalism and the Internet indicate a general shift in journalism altogether, regarding journalists’ norms, values and standards in a (nearby) digital future.
