Abstract

The application of ICT in an organization leads to a dynamic interaction between technology and organization. Four case studies concerning the use and effects of e-mail in a large Dutch governmental organization, provide an empirical analysis of this interaction. The process of ‘innovation in use’ of ICT (the adaptation of this technology) is central in this study. Four phases are distinguished in this process: implementation, innovation, consolidation and re-animation. The specific course of the process through these phases is explained by the influence of technological innovation on this organizational innovation process.
