Op zoek naar een nieuw thuis: een exploratieve studie naar het media- en integratiegedrag van vluchtelingen
Abstract
The central theme in this study is the extent to which a relationship can be found between the motives for media use by refugees in the Netherlands and the degree of their integration in Dutch society, as perceived by the refugees themselves. This limited study reveals that refugees predominantly use the mainstream media. The most important motive for using these media is to keep informed of what happens in their immediate environment, in Dutch society, and in the rest of the world. Another important motivation is to learn Dutch and to get acquainted with Dutch culture. Refugees also make use of foreign media, but to a lesser degree, and mainly to keep in touch with their country of origin. In other words, they continue to experience and develop their own culture but not at the expense of Dutch culture. There seems to be a connection between the motives for making use of the different media on the one hand and the extent to which they become integrated in the Netherlands on the other hand, especially when those motives have to do with getting to know Dutch language and culture. This research is meant to contribute to the composition of Dutch media contents with a view to helping optimise the integration process of refugees in the Netherlands.
