Abstract

This article describes a survey among a sample of the Dutch public of perceptions of applications of genetic engineering as food, animals and related to humans. Furthermore, preferences and judgements are studied with respect to the information flow about this issue between the public and various organisations. The results indicate that more than half of the subjects reject genetic engineering, approximately 25 % is some what positive about it, and approximately 25% is ambivalent about it. Most respondents feel that organisations do not very well with respect to information transfer. According to the respondents, only the media provide the public with enough information. Government, organisations and public should have more influence on decisions made regarding genetic engineering. Many respondents indicate that the influence of scientists and private sector should be somewhat less. The implications of these results for a communication policy on genetic engineering are discussed.
