Abstract
To test the influence of monopoly versus competition on newspaper content, a content analysisis performed on a daily newspaper De Gelderlander which appears in two cities, under different circumstances and with different local editions. One of them a one-paper city (Nijmegen), the other a two paper city (Arnhem). In both cities the relationship between newspaper content and political items is assessed. This study focuses on newspaper performance, the role of the policy agenda in the construction of the media-agenda, and on the consequences for the diversity of the press. Most important conclusion is that in Arnhem, the internal diversity of the newspaper is larger, compared to the newspaper in Nijmegen. Besides the Arnhem edition performs better in following the political items. The results of this study suggest that being in a competitive situation actually leads to better journalism; that is, journalism from more perspectives, and journalism that is more attuned to the actual political events.
