Exploratief onderzoek onder public affairs-functionarissen

Abstract

This is a report of an exploratory study among 79 public affairs practitioners. This group consists mainly of men between 40 and 50 years old, which could be called a ‘elitist’ group, for their mean level of education and mean incomes lie well above average. They also function at the highest levels in their organisation. It is mainly a stand-alone function. Their previous work lies mainly in the field of communication. Most think that public affairs is a specific profession in its own right. They spend most of their time at lobbying and deliberating. Although their own schooling lies predominantly in economics, law and political sciences, they mention communication related subjects as the preferred study for their successors. Factor analysis on their agreement scores with a number of professional statements reveal three distinct clusters of opinions: either the interest of the client, or the importance of public affairs, or the importance of democratic control.
