Abstract
Computers can play different roles in text analysis. We will examine a program which functions as a computerized decision support system: CETA (Computer Aided Evaluative Text Analysis, developed by Van Cuilenburgetal.,1988). CETA is based on a method of text analysis, known as the Network analysis of Evaluative Texts (the net-method). In evaluating CETA we will focus mainly on the methodological principles of this program. After outlining the principles of the net-method and the recommended procedures for the use of CETA, we will formulate several hypotheses concerning its strengths and weaknesses. These hypotheses will be tested by means of a case study: an in-depth analysis of news coverage by the New York Times of the air traffic controllers’ strike against the Reagan administration in the early 1980s. We will consider primarily one key New York Times editorial to illustrate the potentials and limitations of this method of text analysis.
