Abstract
Interactive television (ITV) is still in its developing stage. In this article an outline of its future prospects is presented, describing the possibilities and problems in the development of ITV applications. A number of experiments with several interactive applications of television is summarised in brief. Furthermore we discuss the possibilities of ITV as a broadcast medium. Finally the results of research into viewers’ interest in interactive applications of television is presented. These results show that the applications which were investigated up till now, have not been very successful. Successful applications of ITV in the future will thoroughly have to take into account the needs, habits, viewing behaviour and expectations of viewers.
