Abstract

The reciprocal relationship between a production process and the communication system (the communication chain) is the subject of this contribution. This relationship is illustrated by means of a case description, based on the Twente Organisational Communication Model. This model emphasizes the interdependency of organisational aspects and communication aspects. In the case the focus is mainly on the relation between the following aspects: environment, organisational structure, communication structure and communication means. In the description of the communication system the importance of seeking a balance between tightly coupled and loosely coupled systems is made clear. However, central in this paper the notion that the communication system gives the opportunity to optimise itself and the production process, by means of interaction. As a result the referential framework is changing and therefore the organisation.
