Beeldvorming en burgerschap: media, migranten en de multiculturele samenleving
- Kees Brants
Abstract
Both the ‘pictures in our heads’ and the media representation of migrants in most West european multicultural societies are of a group causing problems (drugs, crime) and, to a lesser degree, having problems (discrimination, unemployment). An overview of opinion research and media content analysis shows that the Netherlands is no exception. The specific characteristics of the cultural identity of the different groups of migrants is pictured as deviant and through that not recognised as equal. The likely effect is that citizenship-particularly the cultural element of identity, and the communicative competence and right to ‘live’ this-is hindered and thus the realisation of a multicultural society hampered.
