Abstract

In this article we present a study of communication between cancer patients and health practitioners in two hospitals. We interviewed several practitioners and patients, using several concepts of the Sense Making Approach. We were particularly interested in the way patients make sense of the different stages of their disease. On the other hand we focused on the way practitioners deal with patients and their information needs. Most cancer patients in the two hospitals are in their opinion treated kindly by the practitioners. Talking about the information they have got or expected they are less satisfied. The information patients get is not being given systematically and structured. In general practitioners and patients talk mainly about medical problems, even though half of the questions and problems patients name in the interviews are about non-medical, psychosocial aspects of their disease.
