Abstract

In 1991 the Dutch government started a five-year publication campaign aimed at the prevention of sexual violence against girls and women. The target group consisted of boys and men who were, via the mass media or via intermediary agents, appealed to refrain from coercive sexual behaviour. This article reports an evaluation study, which consisted of a mix of methods, on the effects of the campaign. Repeated measurement of several indicators under different crosssections shows that boys and men who were exposed to the campaign have slightly more knowledge and favourable attitudes, and report higher issue-involvement than those who were not exposed. Focus group discussions with boys and men show that the general, abstract norm that sexual violence is unacceptable, is subscribed. However, when the discussion focuses on more concrete situations, this norm becomes less self-evident. The implications for future education and campaigning activities will be discussed.
