Abstract

At the end of 1995 the editorial board of NOS Radio News were considering the restyling of their news broadcasts on the Dutch public pop-radio station, Radio 3. The main alterations would be to make the style of the news broadcasts more consistent with the rest of the station by using a less formal approach, by an increase in the redundancy and by using tunes to separate the different news items. The results of experimental research indicated that the restyled broadcasts were more comprehensible and that the information presented was retained better. The appreciation of the restyled programs was much lower however. Qualitative research (focus groups and individual interviews) was used to discover which changes were appreciated by the audience, and which changes were not. In early 1997 some of the changes were implemented in the news broadcasts. Six month later a telephone survey was held to evaluate the changes. The changes were apparently well received by the listeners.
