Abstract
Many participate in the production of popular music. A central role in this process is performed by gatekeepers who select music onto the next stage in the decision chain. Studies of the context of producing music attempt to map the organization of this context. In this study production of music is regarded as a cultural practice of producing meaning. We want to stress the cultural aspects rather than the economical or industrial aspects. But what is the relation between the context of music production and the production of meaning itself? In this study the authors want to show the production of meaning is not a game of chance or coincidence. The production of meaning is structured. And the organization of the context of music production plays an important role in this structuring of the production of meaning.
