Abstract
An experiment was designed to investigate how tv commentary during soccer games affects children’s judgments on aggresive fouls. Children (N=96) from grades 5 and 6 watched a series of fouls on video with three types of commentary: disapproving, neutral, or approving. When the commentator disapproved of the player’s aggressive actions, children rejected the fouls more strongly than when the commentator approved of the actions. The commentary effect was found with fouls among two foreign players, fouls of foreign players on Dutch players, and fouls of Dutch players on foreign players. The commentary effect appeared to apply not only to children who do not particularly like soccer games on tv but even to children who fancy the genre.
