Review Essay

De talkshow als postmoderne publieke ruimte

Author
  • Andra Leurdijk

Abstract

Traditional distinctions between information and entertainment have become inadequate to categorize and analyse many new televison formats. This review essay discusses recent literature in the field of cultural studies on one of these formats: the talkshow. Some authors consider talkshows as a postmodern public sphere, which is qualitatively different from the Habermasian notion of the public sphere as a place of informed and rational debate. They show for example how talkshows privilege contextualized knowledge of lay-people over abstract expert knowledge. The authors often use the term ‘postmodern’ in an unspecific way to describe a wide variety of qualities and different kinds of talkshows. Nevertheless the literature convincingly shows the need for developing new terms and standards for analyzing and evaluating popular forms of journalism.
