Abstract

This article first describes the state of the art with regard to the accountability of Dutch central government public information campaigns during the 1980’s. On the basis of two empirical investigations, one dealing with the impact of campaigns and the other dealing with the costs attached to this tool of government, it is concluded that there was a lack of accountability information. The second question focusses on the contents of the policy responses by the government given these findings. The paper describes three responses and reports also on future challenges.
