Milieu-informatie en machteloosheid: een onderzoek naar de inhoud van de milieuboodschap
- Gerard Tertoolen
Abstract
Does negative news about the natural environment cause feelings of powerlessness and passivity? Will it lead to the idea that individual contributions to a better environment are useless? The present study compares the effects of three messages differing in expectations about the future: a negative one about the environment, a positive one about the environment, and a positive one about technology. In accordance with the hypothesis the negative message as compared to both other ones turns out to lead to feelings of powerlessness about the environment and a decrease in the need to contribute to a better environment. Implications of this findings are discussed.
