"Elektriciteit tussen jou en mij": over de gender-specifieke betekenis van popmuziek

Abstract

In this article the meaning of popular music in the lives of boys and girls is discussed. Do differences exist between the sexes with regard to their preferences in popular music? In what way is popular music meaningful for young people and is this related to one’s gender? Often boys and girls differ in their pop preferences; popular music appears to have distinct meanings for them. The concepts ‘teenybop’ and - to a lesser extent - ‘cockrock’ describe the different ways in which popular music can be seen as gender-specific empowerment for people. This seems to cohere with more general differences between the sexes.
