Abstract

Two relatively recent approaches in communication science, the ‘dynamic-transactional approach’ and the ‘action theoretical approach’, are employed in a research project into the effects of local newspapers’ information during a local election campaign in Dortmund, Germany, in the fall of 1984. From the more ‘general’ approaches, conceptual models are deduced, operationalized and researched using secondary data analyses. As the research project shows, the basic assumptions of the ‘dynamic-transactional approach’ are hardly tenable, whereas for those of the ‘action theoretical approach’ a small support can be found.
