Adoptie, gebruik en effecten van electronic mail in organisaties
Abstract
In this article, a combination of literature study and meta-analysis is applied to give insight into the factors influencing the adoption and use of electronic mail, and the effects the use of this medium has for an organization. This refers to two separate, yet related organizational processes: 1 diffusion of a communications medium within an organization (E-mail as ‘content’ of an organizational process) and 2 organizational communication via this medium and the effects this has on other organizational processes, notably the execution of tasks (E-mail as ‘medium’). It is found that the following factors influence adoption, use and effects of electronic mail: 1 task characteristics; 2 user characteristics; 3 organizational characteristics; 4 implementation strategy; 5 medium characteristics. The meta-analysis distinguished a number of relationships on three levels of analysis (organizational, group and individual level) and stressed the interrelatedness of these levels. A conceptual model is designed which is the basis for a number of case studies in organizations. A combination of literature study and meta-analysis is found to be an appropriate method to design such a model.
