Abstract

In dealing with problems regarding the position of ethnic minorities, a considerable use is made of educational films in the Netherlands. These films are meant tot enable ethnic minorities to find their way in the Dutch welfare state, and to inform autochtonous people about the cultural backgrounds of the new-comers. Our research addresses the representation of interethnic relations in these films. In this article, we analyze the contradictions the thematize, the ways in which they represent the social actors confronting each other, and the lines of development they sketch. The results of the analysis are discussed against the background of the Dutch myth of tolerance. In conclusion, we suggest alternative ways of representing interethnic relations in educational films.
