De bruikbaarheid van indicatoren voor het vaststellen van historische trends in het lezen

Abstract

When charting historical trends in reading, one can choose from different indicators, which sometimes yield opposite conclusions. Using different types of trend data, collected between 1955 and 1990, it is investigated which indicators arc best suited to establish historical trends in reading. It is concluded that only two indicators reflect reading trends: reading time as assessed in time budget research, and, to a lesser extent, sales figures for books. Other indicators are of a deceitful kind.
