Abstract

Available time budget surveys are showing an unmistakable shift from reading towards television viewing as the main activity in people’s leisure time. The decreasing use of printed matter however did not continue in the period after 1985. Some groups of media users, like the better educated and the people from the cohorts before the television-age (born before 1950) are changing there patterns of media use slightly. In the most recent period they spend a little more time on reading and a little less time on television viewing. The reading habits of these groups are expressed the most clearly in the reading of books, quality newspapers and regional newspapers. Yet, until now this group is not followed in their reading behaviour by the younger cohorts of higher educated. More and higher education of young people did not result in more time spent on reading.
