Abstract

There has recently been a shift from a Marxist towards a structuralist perspective in the subcultural approach to the study of youth cultures. This theoretical change is closely related to developments in the field of cultural production and the media, as well as to the level of ideology. These developments have transformed subculture during the past decades. The theoretical consequences of this change have not yet been elaborated. In this article the transformation of subculture is analysed and a new theoretical framework is outlined.
