TV-geweld en angst: een nuancering van cultivatie-effecten
Abstract
In this study we tried to assess the relationship between television viewing and fear of crime. To this end questionnaires were completed by 320 adolescents of various education levels. By multiple regression analyses we determined the contribution to the prediction of fear of (a) the demographics (b) television exposure (c) program selectivity (newsprograms, crimeseries, horrorfilms and soaps) and (d) viewing attitude (attention, involvement and perceived realism). The results showed that newsprograms, horrorfilms, perceived realism and particularly involvement were rather important predictors of fear of crime. In addition gender turned out to be an important mediating variable with regard to the effects studied.
