Abstract

A common critique about Third World news reporting on television, is that this reporting is incorrect and that as a consequence the public gets a distorted image of the Third World. Implicit in this line of thinking is that television plays an important role in this process of image construction. In this article the television's role in the construction of a Third World image is analysed. This was done by a content analysis for reconstructing the television's image and a telephone survey on the public's image. By comparing the results of both we could get an idea of the role television plays in the process of image construction of the Third World. The comparison is made by means of the factor 'media usage'. It appears that people who mainly use television to remain informed about the Third World have an image which is more in line with the television's image than people who mainly use other sources of information on the Third World.
