Abstract

In this study changes in the coverage of environmental risks in Dutch newspapers in the period 1977-1984 were assessed. From two national (Volkskrant, Telegraaf) and two local newspapers (Twentsche Courant, Limburger) 4318 articles were selected. The Volkskrant published about 3 times more articles than The Telegraaf and devoted about 5 times more lines of text on this subject, while the local newpapers took a middle position. Over the years the number of articles has increased in the Volkskrant, Telegraaf and Twentsche Courant. The amount of lines of text on environmental risks has increased in all newspapers except the Telegraaf. The coverage of incidents with respect to environmental risks in this period was relatively limited and decreased over the years. The newspapers pay more attention to the long term problems, like air pollution. The coverage of risks is relatively constant over the years; only the amount of coverage of the risks of soil pollution has increased.
