Raad voor de Journalistiek zeker niet overbodig!
Abstract
In a previously published article the author (W.F. Korthals Aites) advocated the abolition of the Dutch Press Council on the grounds that it deals with legal matters that should be taken care of by a court of justice. In a reply Evers claims that it is primarily up to journalism itself to guard and develop its professional ethics. It is an undesirable development if the boundaries of ethics in journalism should be determined by the law. After comparing the criteria of review used by the Press Council and the courts, he concludes that the Council should be retained. But. apart from handling complaints, it should be allowed to provide ‘declarations of principle” in matters of journalistic ethics.
