Communicatieve en koloniserende media: filosofische aspecten van de moderne massamedia
Abstract
Based on a sketch of the current societal trends regarding individualization and automatization, exploration is conducted as to what degree the modern mass media contribute to strengthening or weakening the communicative ability of users. With the aid of Habermas’ theory of communicative action, three media functions are described: commercialization of the media, bureaucratization, and rationalization of everyday communicative practice. The conclusion is that the mass media are in principle ambivalent and that multiple functions can be fulfilled simultaneously.
