Abstract
Since its origin the knowledge gap hypothesis has been severely criticized and consequently modified several times. The purpose of this article is to investigate the hypothesis, that an increasing knowledge gap between high and low educated segments in the population is due to a difference between interest of both groups in the subject. To this end data from an evaluation research regarding effects of a VD education campaign in the Netherlands held in 1985/1986 have been analysed. It concerns a panel study among a representative sample of 700 persons from the Dutch population of 15-45 years old. The hypothesis stated was not supported clearly. In the case of some aspects of knowledge regarding VD, those with a more complex terminology, the level of education seems of decisive importance in acquiring knowledge. In the case of aspects of knowledge of a more simple and practical level, interest in the subject seems an important factor along with level of education.
