Wordt de krant het stiefkind van de media-opvoeding?

Abstract

Despite efforts of teachers and the daily press, bringing children up to be critical consumers of newspapers appears to have been rather unsuccessful in the Netherlands so far. Since 1975, the average time adolescents spend reading the newspaper has decreased to no more than five minutes a day. Research material is scanty and insufficiently elucidates the issue of children and newspaper education. It is recommended to investigate time-spending patterns and the function of newspapers for children upwards of six; to improve the cooperation of parents and teachers as (newspaper-) educators; and finally to intensify the interactive communication potential of (regional) newspapers and their journalistic activities for young people.
