Abstract

At the present, many projects that stimulate children to read are in progress. Children spend less time on reading. The decrease in sales figures concerning children’s books and the alleged increase of the number of illiterates are the reasons that stimulating measures are being taken. In this article, we briefly discuss the research on children’s reading behaviour. Subsequently, the most important activities aimed at promoting book reading are dealt with. Research on children’s reading behaviour generally is hardly based on theory. For this reason, the insight into the individual and social factors that determine reading behaviour is still insufficient. This insight is a prerequisite for a well-chosen design of stimulating activities.
