Abstract
Using oral interviews with parents(N = 968) and with their children aged 3-16 (N = 1 109) the study investigated:(a) parental attitudes towards children’s television use and the effect of television on children;(b) the extent to which parents guide their children’s viewing; and (c) the relationship between parental TV attitudes and guidance. Parents hold a sophisticated view of television effects; that is, television is viewed as simultaneously good and bad. Parental control and guidance of children’s television viewing is employed most frequently with young children (up to the age of 12 years) and in high-SES households. Parents who are strongly concerned about the ill effects of television on children are more inclined to restrict children’s viewing, whereas parents who ascribe strong positive influences to television are more inclined to discuss television with the child.
