Abstract

The article presents an overview of Dutch media education initiatives pertaining to television and film. The historical development of media education in the Netherlands is briefly sketched. Then, the present ”in-school” and ”out-of-school” activities concerning media education are described. It is argued that media education should be an obligatory subject in both the curricula of primary and secondary schools. In addition, curriculum developers should construct learning materials that have been tested in the field and that can be used by teachers who are no experts on the subject.
