Het mediagebruik van drie- tot en met zestienjarigen: een tijdsbestedingsonderzoek
- Jan Van Lil
Abstract
A time-use study based on a representative sample of children between the ages of 3and 16 (n = 1109) charts the use of communication media in relation to other activities. The proportion of leisure time that children spend with media appears to increase strongly with age: 16% for preschoolers. 24% for elementary school children and 37% for 12 to 16-year-olds. An increase in television viewing, as well as in radio/cassette listening starting at age 12, accounts for a major part in the overall increase in media consumption. Children below the age of 12 spend more time on playing than they do on all media-related activities combined. Children from lower socioeconomic milieus are the most intensive users of the audio-visual media. In comparison with girls, boys spend a lot of time watching television, while girls devote relatively more time to listening to cassette recordings and the radio, and to reading books.
