Abstract

Journalism as a profession has its own tasks and responsibilities in society and therefore its own ethical issues and dilemmas. Media ethics, especially ethics of journalism, reflects on those issues and tries to formulate guidelines for the responsible practice of journalism. The ’Raad voor de Journalistiek’ (Press Council) deals with complaints about and passes judgement on the professional conduct of journalists. The council operates as a ’council of opinion’ without having powers of legal sanction. In its verdicts a set of rules of a more general nature can be found, for example with regard to guarantees for the anonymity of suspects and with regard to agreements between journalists and sources. The last part of the article deals with some recently published cases, such as those concerning the publication of the full name of victims of crimes and the protection of anonymous sources.
