De internationale verspreiding van televisiefictie: verslag van een UNESCO-project
- Ben Manschot
Abstract
Tv fiction accounts for a very large share of global tv consumption and is one of the most popular genres of programming. It is also one of the most expensive. Few countries have a market large enough to support a substantial production of indigenous tv-fiction. Internationally seen a few major exporters seem to dominate the market. In 1988 UNESCO, together with NOS and University of Amsterdam, organized a Consultation of experts to examine the present situation. Some indepth studies preliminated this Consultation. A full report of Consultation and studies will be ready by the end of this year. The article gives an overview of the main results and conclusions of the Consultation. US dominance of the market is deteriorating; some new regional suppliers like Japan, Hongkong and Brazil are growing rapidly, Different initiatives for co-production within regions (e.g. E.E.C.) are under way. UNESCO could support this trend toward plurality by assisting, particularly, 3rd world countries with production- and distribution-facilities.
