Abstract

In social sciences until recently only little attention has been payed to the role backgroundmusic plays within films. This is probably due to the fact that analysing filmmusic in the context of both the verbal discours and the visual discours requires at the same time some basic knowledge of filmtheoretical insights, an adequate tool on behalf of the analysis of meanings of music and some general communicationtheoretical know how. This article deals with the possibilities of analysing the extra-musical meaning of popular music in televisionfilms. More in particular, a method is introduced and discussed with the help of which it is possible to get some insight in the role of the musical discours in creating a ’preffered’ meaning of television documentaries. Although not departing from any sort of universality mythe (concerning the existence of universal dimensions of (extra-musical) meaning), this method to a certain degree corresponds to Osgood’s semantic differential.
