Abstract
In survey research, frequency measures or general estimates of television viewing and reading time are often used to replace diary measures. In an empirical validation study, it was assessed how well diary measures can be substituted by a number of general and frequency estimates of television viewing and reading. A sample of 130 nine to twelve-year-olds filled out questionnaires including several different general and frequency estimates, and kept a television and reading diary during two successive weeks. The diary measures of children’s viewing and reading time were used as a criterion to determine the validity of the various estimates. The general estimates used, did not adequately measure the time individual children spent on television viewing and reading, nor did they result in an unbiased estimate of the sample’s average time spent on television viewing and reading. The general estimates did, however, provide a valid ordinal measure of television viewing time, especially those in which more detailed questions were asked. This was true for the ten to twelve-year-olds; among nine-year olds, frequency measures proved to be mort valid. As a measure of reading time, however, both general estimates and frequency measures proved to be invalid.
