Abstract
The ’’Withuiskrant” is a magazine made for and partially by clients and patients of the health centre ’’Withuis” in Venlo. This magazine is published four or five times a year and distributed among the about ten thousand clients of the centre. In this article we try to answer the questions, whether the ’’Withuiskrant” has an influence on the way clients experience their relationships with their family doctor (GP) in the centre, on their involvement in the health centre and on their caretaking for their own health. To answer these questions, a research was executed with a representative sample of 325 clients of the centre. Research results did support the hypotheses, that by reading the magazine doctor-patient relationships are facilitated -more free and easy -, the involvement in the health centre is increased and the care for one’s own health is enhanced. However, the research design - a cross sectional one - allows no definitive conclusions. The findings surely show that it is important and even necessary to make a further study into the functioning of such patients magazines as a health education device.
