Abstract

A quantitative input-output analysis of foreign news of the Belgian national agency Belga reveals that the output as well as the input is very strongly concentrated on Europe and the western hemisphere. Even in the rare news items from the non-western world a majority refers to the actions or influence of western countries in those parts of the world. The analysis of the content categories shows a dominant position of political, military, economic and sports news in both input and output. Yet Belga clearly moves the accent from politics to sports and economy. The news from Belga relies mainly on the international news agencies and is not significantly less conflict-oriented than the input news.
