Culturele indicatoren, 1980-1985
Abstract
In this article the results of a content analysis of drama-programmes broadcasted on Dutch television in 1985 are reviewed. This content analysis is based on Gerbner’s Cultural Indicators theory. The results of the analysis of 1985 are compared with the same analysis preformed in 1980. One of Gerbner’s hypothesis is tested, namely the thesis ’’television reality is characterized by stable patterns”. The results indicate that although there are significant differences in genre, there is no significant difference between the topics which are presented in drama-programmes or which are a central part of the plot of drama-programmes. Violence is, as assumed by Gerbner, an important part of (Dutch) television reality. This conclusion is not based on the Violence Index - we doubt the validity of this measure - but on the basic components of this measure. In most cases there is no significant difference between results for 1980 and 1985 as indicated by the scores on the components of the Violence Index. This conclusion is valid for the comparison between 1980 and 1985 for all drama-programmes, for children- and youth-drama-programmes, for Prime Time drama-programmes, for drama-programmes as broadcasted by the different Dutch broadcasting organisations or for drama-programmes with a different origin.
