Traditionele nieuwsmedia? Nee, dank u! Bevindingen van wie deze media mijden en wantrouwen

Abstract

The article explores the increasing phenomena of news avoidance and distrust in traditional news media, a trend that poses significant concerns for both the media industry and democratic processes. This research investigates the underlying causes of news avoidance and distrust by analyzing 80 interviews with individuals who either avoid or distrust traditional news media.

The research methodology involved conducting semi-structured interviews with a diverse group of participants, ranging in age from 24 to 76 years. The study's sample contains individuals from various backgrounds, including those with different political orientations, social statuses, and educational levels. The research aims to capture the complex motivations and backgrounds behind news avoidance and distrust, and to identify recurring themes and patterns.

The analysis identifies multiple layers of factors contributing to news avoidance and distrust, likened to peeling an onion. The outer layer reflects widely held beliefs about journalism, while deeper layers reveal more about the backgrounds and life circumstances of those who avoid or distrust the news. Key drivers in the outer layers of these phenomena are negativity of the news,  fear mongering, perceived biases and elitism, hidden agendas,  and a lack of representation in the media. Elements of personal background – the inner layers - lead to the conviction of the democratic deficit of traditional news media among distrusters, and to a weak sense of agency among news avoiders with accompanying attitude of “who cares?".

The findings emphasize the importance of understanding the voices of those who avoid or distrust traditional news media, as their perspectives are crucial for addressing the growing disconnect between the media and the public. The study suggests that news avoidance and distrust are not just individual choices but are deeply rooted in broader societal stratifications and life circumstances. Addressing these issues requires a nuanced approach that involves broader action than can be realized by media alone.
