Zoals het nog nooit verteld is. Narratieve keuzes en karakterisering in de nieuwe golf mythologische hervertellingen uit een vrouwelijk perspectief.

Abstract

In this article I discuss the how and why of a recent phenomenon in contemporary popular genre fiction: mythological retellings from a female perspective. After a short introduction I focus in particular on the choices in characterization that are made and on narrative strategies that modern authors follow when they retell the old myths. Why is the choice so strikingly often for ‘the whole life story’, and then often in the form of a pseudo-autobiographical first-person narration from birth? And if you want to make every female character sympathetic and understandable, don’t you lose something too?
