Umberto Eco’s historical novel Baudolino (2000) is laced with quotations and references to other literary works, of which the Χρονική διήγησις, by the Byzantine historiographer Nicetas Choniates (1155-1217), is probably the least well known, though it is one of the most interesting. In this article 1 demonstrate the ways in which Eco integrated the character and the work of Choniates into Baudolino, and how these relate to the general themes of the novel.
