Abstract
This article gives an elaborate survey of the evolution of the vision on mankind in ancient Greek culture. The description starts with Homer, examines the Classical and Hellenistic eras and reaches until early Christianity. Special attention is paid to influences of other Mediterra¬ nean cultures and to the importance of Greek culture both in the ancient and in the modern world.
