Abstract

This paper refines the popular view of classical Antiquity as a society overvaluing physical qualities to the detriment of disabled persons. The first part of the article examines the social services in classical Athens, especially based on texts by Lysias, Aeschines and Aristotle. In a second part, some aspects of the daily life of disabled persons are discussed, with special attention to the public posts, religious and political, they could or could not hold.
