Abstract

In this article, I shed light on an already extinct subdialect of Cappadocian Greek: Axenitika, the dialect of the village of Axo (currently Hasaköy, Turkey). The aim is to point out the slightly paradoxical amount of Turkish influence in Axenitika. This subdialect contains a large, substantial number of Turkish elements, whereas the village was entirely free of Turkish inhabitants. However, there are socio-economic reasons that account for the heavy Turkish borrowing in Axenitika. Subsequently, this article provides some striking examples of Turkish influence in Axenitika phonology, lexicon, morphology and syntax.
