Hoe Euripides’ tragedies een maatschappelijk debat vertolken
- Ludo Hugaerts
Abstract
Are all men – rich and poor, master and slave, male and female, Greek and barbarian – created equal? This theme was one of the many on which fierce debates kept going on in the period of the so-called Athenian Enlightenment. It is surprising to see how Euripides transferred this social debate to the stage. Clashing ideas about equality in his tragedies become tangible realities and people of flesh and blood.
